It's not a leap of faith
As I conclude month 2 of a startup accelerator, I reflect on a metaphor I keep coming up against: the leap of faith.
For some people in some situations the leap of faith seems on point: where you truly make a decision once and then some force kicks in. You've made the big scary decision and you're away - you've done it!
And it's normative - the leap of faith frames taking the jump as a good thing, not to pull back from it - the hero never decides not to take the leap of faith.
I feel it's a confusing metaphor, because nearly every decision is reversible, barring contracts or sticky enough habit. I find it unusually hard to get strong conviction on ideas or choices which require some years of commitment.
After hunting for a better metaphor, the best I have is... it's more like very slowing getting into a bath, where you're testing the water (as it were) and could jump out at any time.
